Extra-Curricular Cultural Activities
At Mangorei School, we believe in fostering a well-rounded education that goes beyond the classroom. Our extra-curricular cultural activities provide students with opportunities to develop their creativity, confidence, and teamwork skills while exploring their passions.
We currently offer a diverse range of cultural activities, including:
Kapa Haka – Embrace the rich traditions of Māori performing arts through waiata (songs), haka, and poi. Students will have opportunities to perform at school events and regional competitions.
Brass Instruments – Learn to play brass instruments such as the trumpet, trombone, and euphonium under expert guidance. This programme is perfect for students interested in classical and contemporary music.
Ukulele & Guitar – Develop musical skills with these versatile string instruments. Whether students are beginners or have prior experience, they can enjoy learning chords, melodies, and songs in a fun and supportive environment.
School Band (Years 5-8) – Our school band brings together young musicians to play a variety of instruments and perform at school assemblies, concerts, and community events. This is the only activity held outside of regular school hours, with rehearsals scheduled after school.
Chess Club – Sharpen strategic thinking and problem-solving skills through friendly matches and tournaments. Chess is a great way for students to challenge themselves while having fun with peers.
Choir – Join our school choir and experience the joy of group singing. Students perform a range of musical styles at school events and local performances.
Debating – Build confidence in public speaking, critical thinking, and persuasive argumentation. Our debating teams compete in inter-school competitions, helping students develop essential communication skills.
Most of these activities take place before school or during lunchtime, allowing students to participate without conflicting with their academic studies. Many of these cultural groups also have opportunities to perform at school functions, community events, and competitions, providing valuable experiences in teamwork and leadership.
Encouraging students to take part in these activities enhances their school experience and helps them develop lifelong skills and friendships.
