Leadership Development

At Mangorei School, we believe that developing leadership skills is a vital part of preparing our senior students for future success. Our leadership programme provides students with a range of opportunities to build confidence, take on responsibility, and contribute positively to the school community.

Being a leader starts at 5 years old with class teachers providing opportunities within the class programme to allow all children to experience what it means to lead.

At Mangorei School we have an active School Council made up of representatives from Year 5 to 8 classes. These class councillors present thoughts from classes and decide on next steps to make the school a better place. This can include planning and running events to raise funds for charities, lobbying for improvements around the school and helping to drive the school values focus.

Leadership Opportunities for Senior Students

Students in Years 7 and 8 have the chance to develop their leadership skills through:

School-Wide Duties – Senior students take on responsibilities that support the daily running of the school, fostering independence and accountability.

Buddy System – Year 7 and 8 students are paired with younger students or classes, acting as role models and providing guidance and support.

Annual Leadership Conference – All Year 8 students attend a national leadership conference designed to inspire and equip them with the skills needed to lead with confidence. Our Year 7 tamariki have an option to attend a local leadership day.

Student Achievement & Recognition

To encourage well-rounded growth, students in Years 7 and 8 track their involvement across various areas using a CV Card, which records their participation in:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Sporting Achievements
  • Cultural Activities
  • Duties & Service Contributions

By accumulating enough points in a particular area, students are awarded an Achievement Certificate. Continued effort in that area leads to a prestigious Certificate of Excellence.

Students who demonstrate outstanding commitment across all four areas—achieving Excellence in at least one category—earn the honour of having their name displayed on the Mangorei School Honours Board.

All students are encouraged to strive for these honours, recognising their dedication and leadership within the school.
