Mangorei School is a full primary school on the southern outskirts of New Plymouth. Catering for children from New Entrants to Year 8 with a roll of approx 300.
We have a proud heritage as a ‘city school with country heart’ which is based on a strong partnerships we build with families and the wider community.
At our culturally diverse school we foster confident, connected, capable, lifelong learners with a talented and committed teaching staff that are supported by an innovative professional development programme.
Our students take pride in the school and their community, and encouraged to take leadership opportunities and are given a role in school protocols and decision making. We make the most of our full primary character, with older and younger children mixing regularly. We take pride in developing children who begin as new entrants and go on to be school leaders in their senior years.
We utilise ICT to enhance our students learning and continuing upgrades are creating outstanding learning environments for students.
Our school has a number of longstanding traditional events, like Pets Day, Resilience and Endurance Run, Whānau Kai Tahi days and Triathlon/Biathlon which make the most of our idyllic school setting.

Enrolment Scheme
Mangorei School (2189)
EFFECTIVE FROM 30TH SEPTEMBER 2016
The guidelines for development and operation of enrolment schemes are issued under section 11G (3) of the Education Act 1989 for the purpose of describing the basis on which the Secretary’s powers in relation to enrolment schemes will be exercised.
HOME ZONE
All students who live within the home zone described below (and shown on the attached map) shall be entitled to enrol at the school.
In a clockwise direction the zone is defined as:
- The zone begins at #306-309 Mangorei Road and connects in a straight line, in an easterly direction, to the western side of Waiwhakaiho River.
- The boundary follows the western side of Waiwhakaiho River heading south. The boundary then crosses Junction Road to connect to Thomason Road. The boundary turns left into Albert Road (#17 Thomason Road is included within the boundary), and proceeds along Albert Road to Hill Road (including both sides of the road).
- The zone proceeds into Hill Road (both sides) to the slopes of Mt Taranaki. (Maude Road is included within the zone).
- The boundary proceeds along both sides of Mangorei Road to the north.
- From Mangorei Road, the boundary travels north (both sides of Baker Road are included within the zone boundary) and continues until Mangorei Road intersects with Junction Road.
- The boundary then runs north along Junction Road (Holly Oak Terrace is included within the zone boundary) including both sides of the road until the intersection with Junction Street. The boundary proceeds along Junction Street (the zone includes 19A Junction Street) until it meets the Te Henui Stream crossing. The boundary follows the Te Henui Stream, crossing the New Plymouth Southern Motorway (SH3). The boundary continues along the southern side of the Te Henui Stream. The Zone encompasses Durham Ave and Lambton Tce and travels in a straight line east to intersect with Heta Road at (and including) #170 and #171 Heta Road. The boundary continues east crossing the top of Karina Road (including #91 Karina Road) and then continues eastward to cross at #306-309 Mangorei Road rejoining the starting point.
Proof of residence within the home zone will be required.
SPECIAL PROGRAMMES
This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary.
OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS
Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.
Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:
FIRST PRIORITY
This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary
SECOND PRIORITY
will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students
THIRD PRIORITY
will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students
FOURTH PRIORITY
will be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school
FIFTH PRIORITY
will be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school
SIXTH PRIORITY
will be given to all other applicants
If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
Starting School
Starting school is a really important event and we are just as interested as parents in helping children to adjust happily and easily to their first school experiences. Your child
is legally entitled to start school at the age of five. We are not permitted to accept a child before that age unless they have previously enrolled under a school doing cohort entry. All children must however be enrolled before they are six.
OUR TRANSITION PROCESS
If your child is eligible to come to Mangorei School
First contact will be made with you
Usually in the term before your child starts school by one of our administrators
Meet the Principal
A meeting with the principal will be arranged approximately six weeks prior to your child starting
Your child visits the classroom
Usually 3 visits – more can be negotiated
Time and date – 3 Wednesdays (9:00 – 10:30 am)
- Become familiar with some of our classroom routines.
- Find where things are.
- A chance to meet the teacher and class friends.
- Bring a school bag and morning tea – stay for a play.
Parents are asked to accompany their child on the first visit and to remain in the classroom while they are there. For the next two visits we encourage parents to leave. This can give an opportunity for discussion, though you might like to make a further appointment for this as well. Bring any questions with you on these days.
ENROLMENT
If you have not already enrolled your child, now would be a good time to make contact with the school office. We like to know at least two terms ahead of your child’s starting date.
A meeting with the principle will be arranged approximately six weeks prior to your child starting date.
When enrolling your child you need to bring:
- Either their Birth Certificate or Passport
- Immunisation Certificate
- The name and phone number of your doctor
- The names of two friends or family members who can be emergency contacts if you are unable to be contacted
- Documentation of proof of living within our zone, unless you have been accepted through an out of zone application (see Pupil Enrolment Checklist)
BEFORE THE FIRST DAY
Parents often want to know: Is there anything we could be working on now? What should my child know before they start school?
Not a checklist, but some questions to think about – can your child
- Put away their belongings?
- Manage taking belongings out of their bag or putting them in?
- Independently go to the toilet? (Have boys had experience at using a urinal?)
- Wash their hands and blow their nose?
- Do up their coat / jacket / shoes?
- Recognise their name?
- Write their name?
- Use scissors?
- Follow simple instructions?
- Use the drinking fountain?
If you answer yes to most of these, then stsrting school will go moresmootly for your child. If there is a no or two, don’t panic! These will be practiced at school.
It is important to remember that children are individuals and will have different abilities and sreas of strength. Your child’ teacher will be able to supoort them as they managed the new skills which they find challenging.
Some other things you might like to try
- Walk/drive to school a few times, so they are familiar with this routine. Don’t forget to follow the road rules and cross at the school Kea crossing.
- Pack their lunch in a lunch box for the day. Have them practise getting out their morning tea and leaving the rest for lunch.
- Come and play on the playground at the weekend.
- Use the drinking fountain.
Independence and Risk-taking
All these skills are to do with independence. A child who shows independence in life-skills or is willing to take risks with new challenges will take to school routines and activities easier and quicker.
Our aim is a smooth transition to school. If your child feels they can cope with a change and everyone concerned helps them make the links from early childhood to school, then learning will continue without interruptions.
Other ways to help your child’s learning
Talk to your child lots, read to them every day, share experiences together and find the learning opportunity in everyday tasks.
Anxieties
Starting school is one of the biggest changes a child will make in their life. It is understandable that they and will be anxious about this. Do not feel bad about this – we unserstand.
If you are feeling anxious try not to let your child know this. Come and talk to us about your concerns, issues or worries. Remember that you and your child’s teacher are a team working together for your child.
If your child is feeling anxious, reassure them. Everyone feels nervous about new things and the teacher is always there to help them.
THE FIRST WEEK
- Arrive at school in plenty of time.
- Accompany your child to the classroom.
- Stay with them as they greet the teacher and the other children.
- Say goodbye with a hug or a kiss – tell them you’ll come back for them after school.
- Arrange to have a coffee with a friend on the first day.
- After school, chat with the teacher, let your child show what they have been doing.
- Begin home reading routines.
- Do lots of reassuring.
- Expect that your child will be tired – you may need to adjust bedtimes accordingly.
- Enjoy the event – take photos, preserve the memories!
General Information
ABSENCES
Sickness
If your child is sick or for some reason going to be away from school please log into your HERO app and mark them accordingly, or you can phone, text or email the office. If you don’t notify the office and your child is absent we will ring or text you to check that they are safe. You can also use the HERO app to make contact with the classroom teacher. Extended sickness periods more than 3 days may require a medical certificate.
Appointments
Please make contact in advance with the classroom teacher and notify the school office if your child has an appointment or is going to be absent for any other reason.
Leave
If your child is going to have a known absence for 3 or more days you are required to make contact with the office informing the school of the reason before the leave occurs.
ACTIVITY FEES
The school will Invoice activity fees throughout the year. The charges include such things as stationery, subscriptions to digital resources, learning opportunities on-site eg. visiting shows and performances and school trip costs. Statements will be emailed throughout the year.
BEHAVIOUR
We expect ‘best’ behaviour from our children at all times and we believe everyone at Mangorei School has the right to play in a safe and caring environment.
Parents can request copies of our School Behaviour Management Plan and our procedures for addressing conflicts.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Meetings
These are usually held around week 3 & 8 of each term on a Wednesday: details in the newsletters. They are open to public who wish to attend.
Minutes
Previous meeting minutes and Principal’s monthly reports are available at the School Office for public inspection.
Policies
All school policies are available for public viewing. These are found on schooldocs.co.nz. Search for Mangorei School, username is Mangorei and the password is country.
TUAKANA / TEINA
Each year we ‘buddy up’ classes so the older children get an opportunity to become a Tuakana (older sibling) to a younger student (Teina – younger brother or sister). This gives the senior students an opportunity to become role models in various ways.
BUSES
See more information on our Busses page. The school has two bus routes servicing the country areas, dropping primary children at school and continuing on to the High Schools. There may be a surcharge for some children.
Approximate times:
UPPER MANGOREI ROAD: Goes up Mangorei Road starting at 7:40am. Leaves school at 3:40pm.
KENT ROAD: Departs at the intersection on Kent Road 8:00am. Leaves school at 3:40pm.
CLOTHING
This school does not have a uniform but we request all students to wear neat, presentable clothes and not to wear T-shirts/sweatshirts with adult or questionable statements. The first step in school pride is to have pride in yourself, and clothing and personal hygiene have their role to play.
Donation
The School Donation is presently $150.00 per child. This is a voluntary contribution but one that is needed for the many extras that cannot be provided for by our budget. Our Equity Index Rating means that we are funded less than schools with a higher index rating and are
Education outside the Classroom
Students are involved in a number of Education Outside the Classroom activities. Every even year our Year 5/6 classes stay at a local camp for three days, while every odd year our Year 7/8 classes go outside the province to attend a camp for a week. Other activities include: river safety, beach education, Puke Ariki and Art Gallery visits as well as a leadership camp, to name a few.
Emergency Numbers
When you enrol at the school we obtain from you your address, email address, phone number and work numbers. We also require an emergency number to contact. Please let us know if these do change, as we need an up to date file if an emergency should occur.
Hours
Our school is open for children from 8.30am.
Country bus children arrive a little earlier and leave around 3:40pm.
Classes:
Start: 9:00am
Morning Interval: 10:30 – 10:50am
Lunch Break: 12:30 – 1:30pm
Classes Finish: 3:00pm
Children not catching a bus or involved in after school care are expected to vacate the school grounds by 3:15pm. If children are here after that time they should be enrolled at the Y’s Kids Care.
Parking
The bus bay can be used to drop off children in the morning but not after school for the safety of our children. The hall car park is for staff parking only. Please be respectful to our school neighbours and their driveways.
Leadership Opportunities
AMBASSADORS / DEPUTY AMBASSADORS
See more information on our Leadership page.
Year 8 students are given the opportunity to become an Ambassador or Deputy Ambassador, one boy and one girl representative for each role. These are selected in Terms 1 and 3 and successful students hold the positions for two terms: Terms 1 & 2 or Terms 3 & 4. The positions are selected from students interested in these roles presenting a speech to the senior management team. Duties for Ambassadors and Deputy Ambassadors include meeting guests, preparing and taking assemblies, leading the school council to name a few of their roles.
Houses
When a child starts school they are put into one of our four House groups – Burgess (Red), Mangamahoe (Green), Ngahere (Yellow) and Tūpare (Blue). Throughout the year our school holds House activities eg. triathlon/biathlon, cross country and athletics and children are encouraged to wear their House colours to these events. Two House Captains are selected by the students in the senior school and the children take this role on for two terms. It is their responsibility to lead their teams on these occasions.
School Council
Twice a year elections are held in the Year 4 – 8 classrooms for two representatives from each classroom to go on to the School Council. The council meets twice a month and discusses suggestions put forward by classes for the betterment of the school. They also organise as well as run a major and minor event over the two terms.
Merit Certificates
The school awards Merit Certificates. The first is a Teacher Merit Certificate to encourage tidiness, being helpful, polite, improvement of work, living our school values etc. The second is a Merit Certificate awarded by the Principal on the Syndicate Leaders recommendation. The children know the formulae:
5 Teacher Merit Certificates = 1 Principal Merit Certificate
10 Merit Certificates = 1 Super Merit Certificate
Year 7 and 8 children have an opportunity to work toward their name being on the school ‘Honours Board’. This can be accomplished by gaining 4 certificates of achievement, and one or more in excellence, in Sporting, Cultural & Arts, Services & Duties and Academic areas.
No Hat, No Play
We have a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy to encourage children to be sun safe while at school during the summer. Children without hats are directed to play in a shaded area and may be excluded from other outside activities. Hats must be wide brimmed or the bucket style. A school sun hat can be ordered through the PTA (ask at the school office for details).
Office Hours
Mrs Goble and Mrs Heslop work in the office. The office is open from Monday – Friday 8.00am – 4.00pm.
Whānau Kai Tahi
Once or twice a term parents are invited to come and have lunch with their children, either outside if the weather permits, or in the classrooms. Children are then encouraged to show parents their latest classroom work. This is also used as a fundraiser as food and drinks are sold.
P.T.A. – Parent, Teacher Association
We have a very active P.T.A. which provides help to the school with a wide range of activities.
Besides arranging various functions the P.T.A. plays a very important part in fund raising. New parents are most welcome to join the team during the year.
Reporting to Parents
Teachers will make contact with parents around the start of the school year through HERO regarding your child. A face to face progress report with parent, child and teacher is held mid year for all year levels and a written summary report is issued at the end of the year. Throughout the year teachers will use real time reporting showing your child’s efforts & achievements throughout the year. Parent lunch days are also an excellent way of viewing your child’s most recent work.
Communication
We pride ourselves on being approachable at all times so if any concerns arise please contact the class teacher first, the syndicate leader or the Principal if appropriate. The staff will be doing the same, not only to discuss concerns but to give praise for work well done.
